Virginia Woolf Gets a Makeover: Haley Bennett and Lily Allen Lead the Charge in ‘Night & Day’
Haley Bennett, Jack Whitehall, and Lily Allen lead a witty, unromantic rebellion. Virginia Woolf’s funniest story gets a sharp, high energy makeover.
Vue Lumière is bringing a vibrant, contemporary energy to a literary classic this summer. The first international trailer for NIGHT & DAY has arrived, offering a look at Virginia Woolf’s most humorous work transformed into a refreshing unromantic comedy. With a cast that jumps off the screen including Haley Bennett, Jack Whitehall, Lily Allen, and comedy legends Jennifer Saunders and Timothy Spall, the film is set for a global rollout starting this June.
The story follows Katharine Hilbery (Bennett), a brilliant astronomer who is much more interested in the stars than finding a husband. Living in 1910 London amidst the suffragette movement and a crumbling patriarchy, Katharine does everything in her power to dodge her parents' marriage traps. When her controlling father (Spall) pushes her toward a family friend (Whitehall), her world is upended by a radical editor (Elyas M’Barek) and a fearless, straight talking suffragette (Allen).
Directed by BAFTA nominee Tina Gharavi and adapted by Justine Waddell, the film trades stuffy period drama tropes for a fun, fast paced tone. It is a story of shifting loyalties and shifting times, set against the stunning backdrops of London, Cambridge, and Cologne.
Global Release Schedule
As an international coproduction between the UK and Germany, the film is hitting major territories throughout the summer:
- UK & Ireland: In cinemas 19 June 2026 via Vue Lumière.
- Germany: Summer 2026 (Coproduced by Senator Film Produktion).
- International: Additional territories to follow via WestEnd Films.
From rebellious cousins to overbearing parents, this ensemble brings a sharp, funny edge to Woolf’s exploration of ambition and love. Whether Katharine manages to claim her space in a man’s world or falls for the very thing she is fighting, Night & Day is shaping up to be the sophisticated comedy of the season.
