Argylle - A Spy Comedy That Quickly Loses its Steam

Argylle is a comedic espionage thriller that entertains for the first act, but quickly loses its firepower. The story follows a reclusive author, played by Bryce Dallas Howard, who is drawn into the world of spies and espionage after she realizes that a new spy novel she is writing mirrors real-world events.

The premise is rather interesting and paired with the incredibly unique director Matthew Vaughn, (known for the Kingsman and Kickass movies) it for sure was meant to deliver the action packed and hilarious scenes we were hoping for. Unfortunately, it provides us with over the top comedic scenes that don't work and a convoluted plot, whilst having an all star cast. It's filled with lots of good ideas that don't mesh well and I feel that Vaughn doesn't fully utilise the talent that he has in his arsenal.

Henry Cavill is marketed as the main character who plays a killer spy and this was meant to be the moment the world was going to see him take on his perfect role, after Bond rumours, but he gets completely sidelined in a film where he should be at the centre. This is the main root of the issue of the film, not giving enough screen time to those who require it. I believe Henry Cavill only had 10 minutes within the whole of the movie, which was the main selling point, leaving many fans disappointed and were only left with a tiresome amount of poorly made jokes.

Ultimately, Argylle does have some fun moments but it is overshadowed by the lack of solid and writing misuse of characters, leading to a perplexing story. However, It can be enjoyed if it's not taken too seriously.
